UN: the crisis insight after the failure of the American resolution on Iran

Unable to obtain the unlimited extension of Iran’s arms embargo, Donald Trump promises a response that embarrasses the other signatories of the 2015 Iran nuclear agreement.

The looming crisis in the United Nations was predictable. Nothing seems, now, able to prevent it. American intransigence vis-à-vis Iran will throw the UN Security Council into a troubled area, perilous for the very credibility of the institution. After the failure of a US draft resolution aimed at indefinitely extending the arms embargo targeting Tehran, Friday, August 14, Washington declares itself ready to use its last trump card thanks to a controversial process which arouses the helpless consternation of the large majority of member states.

On Saturday, Donald Trump promised a quick response which would consist of activating the snapback next week. This mechanism allows the United States to take advantage of its initial participation in the Iranian nuclear agreement concluded between Tehran and the great powers in 2015 to obtain an automatic reimposition of all pre-existing sanctions. Although Mr. Trump decided to leave this agreement in 2018, this approach remains possible because of the haphazard drafting of resolution 2231 which, five years ago, enshrined this great diplomatic achievement of the Obama era.

If the American maneuver is complex, its objective is simple: destroy what is left of the agreement before the presidential election in November. If necessary, by provoking an Iranian reaction strong enough to impose a situation of irremediable confrontation. Secretary of State Michael Pompeo has taken command of this unconventional diplomatic offensive. The stake is for him to ensure that in case of victory of Democrat Joe Biden, no turning back is possible in the policy of “maximum pressure” against Iran, this major legacy of the presidency Trump in foreign policy.
