French (français [fʁɑ̃sɛ] or langue française [lɑ̃ɡ fʁɑ̃sɛːz]) is a Romance language of the Indo-European family. It descended from the Vulgar Latin of the Roman Empire, as did all Romance languages. French evolved from Gallo-Romance, the Latin spoken in Gaul, and more specifically in Northern Gaul. Its closest relatives are the other langues d’oïl—languages historically spoken in northern France and in southern Belgium, which French (Francien) largely supplanted. French was also influenced by native Celtic languages of Northern Roman Gaul like Gallia Belgica and by the (Germanic) Frankish language of the post-Roman Frankish invaders. Today, owing to France’s past overseas expansion, there are numerous French-based creole languages, most notably Haitian Creole. A French-speaking person or nation may be referred to as Francophone in both English and French.

French ( le français ) is one of the Roman languages of the Indo-European family. This language, like Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, Romanian, and some other languages, originated from colloquial Latin in the Roman Empire. Due to the growth of French in the land of flowers, this language is to some extent a combination of the languages of flowers (especially the north of the land of flowers) and Roman. French is one of the closest languages to the Avil language family in Europe. French is also somewhat influenced by the Celtic languages of the Celtic tribes living in northern France.
French is the official language of 29 countries that are members of the Francophone group (countries that use the French language). French is the first language in France, Quebec in Canada, Wallonia in Belgium, western Switzerland, Monaco, and other parts of Canada and the United States. By 2015, about 40% of the Francophone population will live in Europe, 35% in Central and South Africa, and 15% in North and Middle America.
French is the fourth largest language in the European Union in terms of the number of native speakers, and about 20% of the European population has chosen it as their second language. As a result of the powerful colonization of France in the 17th and 18th centuries, large parts of African countries use French as their only or one of their official languages, and many African countries teach it as a second language in their schools. In 2015, French had between 77 and 110 million native speakers and 190 million speakers as a second language. As a result, some 270 million people around the world can speak French.
The French language has a very rich background in culture, art, diplomacy, literature, and science and has had a great impact on a wide range of terms in these disciplines. French is now recognized as one of the official languages of the United Nations, the European Union, NATO, the Veto, the International Olympic Committee and many world-renowned associations. According to a 2011 study by Bloomberg Magazine, French is the third most useful and practical language in the business world (after English and Mandarin Chinese).
