Preface

In this article, we try to introduce the Scaled Agile Framework or SAFe for short. The agile scalable framework, or SAFe for short, is an agile methodology. This methodology is based on three principles: team, software, service (portfolio) for programming teams. SAFe is designed to give teams flexibility and problems for the organization when using Agile. SAFe is not like a simple methodology, but a vast body of knowledge that has been proven in practice and within real teams, and has proven successful in producing efficient software.

The Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) is a set of organization and workflow patterns intended to guide enterprises in scaling lean and agile practices.[1][2] Along with large-scale Scrum (LeSS), disciplined agile delivery (DAD), and Nexus, SAFe is one of a growing number of frameworks that seek to address the problems encountered when scaling beyond a single team.[3][4] SAFe is made freely available by Scaled Agile, Inc., which retains the copyrights and registered trademarks.[5]

SAFe promotes alignment, collaboration, and delivery across large numbers of agile teams. It was developed by and for practitioners, by leveraging three primary bodies of knowledge: agile software developmentlean product development, and systems thinking.[6]

The primary reference for the scaled agile framework was originally the development of a big picture view of how work flowed from product management (or other stakeholders), through governanceprogram, and development teams, out to customers.[7][8] With the collaboration of others in the agile community, this was progressively refined and then first formally described in a 2007 book.[9] The framework continues to be developed and shared publicly; with an academy and an accreditation scheme supporting those who seek to implement, support, or train others in the adoption of SAFe.

Starting at its first release in 2011 already five major versions have been released[10] while the latest edition, version 5.0, was released in January 2020.[11]

While SAFe continues to be recognised as the most common approach to scaling agile practices (at 30 percent and growing),[12][13][page needed][14], it also has received criticism for being too hierarchical and inflexible.[15]

What is the history of the scalable agile framework?

SAFe was introduced in 2011. Initially, it was called the “big picture of an agile organization.” SAFe was presented by software industry veteran Dean Leffingwell, publisher of the Best Agile Software Requirements. It gave an overview of agile frameworks such as Lean, Kanban, Scrum, XP, and how they work in teams, software, and services (portfolios).

Today, SAFe has become one of the most popular agile frameworks and offers a wealth of knowledge of successful templates.

What are the strengths and weaknesses of SAFe?

  • Draws all aspects of a project with broader business objectives

  • Some believe that agility is not real because it has high-level planning and defined processes.
  • They also believe that it should provide a top-down solution instead of a team solution.

Do you need to use a comparable agile framework?

SAFe is very popular among large organizations for solving many of the most common team challenges when using an agile solution. (Companies that use SAFe are like Intel, Cisco and))

If your company recently wants to use an agile solution, SAFe can be a great option to overcome the problems ahead in using an agile solution. This is because it offers a more accurate solution than Disciplined Agile. This gives it more flexibility and personalization. Of course, it is very important that the organization understands the agile philosophy.

It is worth noting that SAFe’s top-down approach to project decision-making and management can undermine some key agile principles such as collective ownership, adaptability, and unstable roles that may make your team interested in the framework and It ultimately makes them agile.
